Ramani is Professor of Perioperative Medicine and Head of the Department for Targeted Intervention at UCL, practising clinically at UCL Hospitals, both in London, UK. She is National Clinical Director for Critical and Perioperative Care at NHS England, and was Director of the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ Health Services Research Centre between 2016 and 2022. Her research focuses on improving our understanding of the determinants of surgical outcome, and the development, evaluation and implementation of interventions to improve perioperative and critical care. She has led research recruiting >80,000 patients from >94% of UK NHS hospitals. For NHS England, she provided national clinical leadership for critical care during Covid and is now leading national transformation programmes in critical and perioperative care. She was awarded the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen in 2021, for services to anaesthetics, critical and perioperative care.
