Abstract
A Cunning Plan

On March 12th 2020 the world health organisation declared a global pandemic. The world as we knew it was about to undergo restrictions on freedom not seen since the second world war. Life was going to be very different for us, though we didn’t quite understand just how much change we would be faced with as a result.

My talk will be predominantly about leading through a crisis in the New Zealand context. The talk will be in 2 parts – firstly we will explore the phases of emotion that we are all experiencing. This is a well described pattern of emotions that are experienced doing catastrophic events for example, the bushfires in Australia, or the Christchurch earthquake. With that understanding as the backdrop, I’ll move on to the explanation of how we put together the COVID plan in Auckland hospital (the biggest tertiary and quaternary hospital in New Zealand) and reflect the attributes of an anaesthetist that we are all familiar with as part of the CanMeds framework which is used as the basis for the fellowship curriculum. To end I’ll give you a few suggestions on how to maintain and improve well being and make the best of a one in a one hundred year event.
