Dr Kenny Chan is currently is the Chief of Service in the New Territories East Hospital Cluster. Apart from his medical training, he holds master degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Statistical Science. His primary interest is the application of advanced technology in improving acute care. He is one of the pioneer for the ECMO service in Hong Kong and was the representative of Hong Kong when the Asia Pacific Chapter of the Extra-corporeal Life Support Organization was formed.
In the past decade, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is becoming a standard life support therapy for critically ill patients, who are not cardiac surgical patients. In a few occasions, emergency ECMO support is required during non-cardiac operation. The presentation will provide a review on the use of ECMO in such circumstances and highlight some critical consideration using actual clinical cases.
