Echo combined Wet-Lab & Simulator full-day Workshop (West China method): Hong Kong College of Anesthesiologists (HKCA) Echo Committee recommends this innovative training workshop for all novice echo learners. Led by Professor Song Hai Bo, the West China Hospital team will use simultaneous porcine heart dissection and 3D heart model simulation to help the novice echo learner to understand the 3D anatomy of the heart in the focused TTE and TOE views. The second part of the workshop will help the learners to acquire basic transthoracic views in human models. This is especially suitable for novice learners who want to learn both focused TTE and TOE in one day.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) involves the use of multidisciplinary, multimodal, and individualized strategies to minimize RBC transfusions with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes. In this PBM workshop, our facilitator will lead participants to collaborate on the diagnoses of real-life scenarios, learn case management by identifying modifiable risks, and see how successful management can improve patient care. Participants will also learn how PBM can evolve through the use of advanced monitoring technologies. These new innovations are helping clinicians around the globe to make earlier and better clinical decisions that advance management, improve outcomes and reduce utilization.

Ultrasonography (USG) and echocardiography has now become an indispensable tool in acute care settings. In this hands-on workshop, we would target on a few aspects on acute resuscitation by using USG to perform FAST scan, to assess the airway and lung pathology, to assist central venous insertion, to detect vascular complication like deep vein thrombosis, to evaluate hemodynamic as well as to help resuscitation during cardiac arrest situation. Our experienced instructors come from different specialties including anesthesiology, emergency medicine and intensive care medicine. You would definitely be confident in using USG when managing your patient after joining this workshop!

Paediatric difficult airway is rare but devastating situation.  Common techniques for managing difficult airway in adults may not be applicable to small tots due to different airway anatomy and inability to cooperate.  Planning, preparation, decision and manual dexterity are keys to success.  In kids, every second counts!

This workshop aims to refresh and upgrade airway skills in different clinical situations in paediatric cases.  These include:

• Supraglottic airway device assisted intubation
• Front of neck access (cannula versus set versus surgical cricothyroidotomy) and oxygenation techniques
• Fibreoptic bronchoscopy assisted intubation skills
• Videolaryngoscopy
• Airway ultrasound
• High flow nasal cannula for preoxygenation

This simulation-based workshop serves as a “Sampling Menu” on potential applications of focused TTE/TOE in the perioperative period, including suspicious cardiac status detected at pre-assessment clinic, unexplained hypotension during surgery or in PACU, and the unexpected peri-arrest/cardiac arrest scenarios.

The use of ultrasound has become the standard of care as it offers a non-invasive and safe option when performing regional blocks. It is essential to grasp some basic understanding and experiences in this area. This workshop will be delivered by expert regional anaesthetists. We will focus on essential knowledge of ultrasound machine, probe handling and safe needling techniques. Workstations will include live model scanning for trunk blocks. Participants are expected to acquire basic knowledge of relevant ultrasound image and skill to perform common nerve blocks after the workshop.

Airway management in modern anaesthesia is an evolving challenge due to the increasing complexity of surgical procedures and changing patients’ characteristics. The use of fiber-optic bronchoscope is getting more important in managing difficult airway situations or during one-lung ventilation. To help anaesthetists familiarize with tracheobronchial anatomy and equip themselves with basic bronchoscopic skills, this workshop provides bronchoscopy simulation training and delivers hands-on practice on the use of bronchoscopy in some commonly encountered situations. This workshop is an extension to the HKCA ADAM-A course.

This workshop aims to share with everyone how to be a better anaesthesia “mixologists” by integrating Thai cuisine and the most interesting and exciting advances in non-invasive patient monitoring technologies, especially for fluid management and organ protection. These technological advances are making “precision anaesthesia” a reality – different patients require different mixes, and creating the right mix for the particular patient is an art form. In this fun and engaging workshop, participants will be divided into groups and play with real Thai cooking ingredients. Our “chef” will guide the participants to use the same ingredients but create a better “taste” for their anaesthesia cocktails!

Perioperative nursing has expanded rapidly in recent decades. The role of a perioperative nurse is no longer restricted to the operating theatre nowadays. Besides exploring the changes in perioperative nurse's basic role, this nursing symposium aims to broaden our horizons beyond the basic. Various technology advancement which can potentially change our practice and open a new page in perioperative nursing will also be demonstrated in this symposium.
